San Jose, Costa Rica, Dec. 11, 2007 - The race for the White House
kicks into high gear once the New Year begins, and Wager Web offers
you the chance to bet on the U.S. presidential race, expected to be
one of the country's tightest in history.
Iowa holds the nation's first caucus on Jan. 3, which is the
earliest ever, with 57 delegates at stake. The New Hampshire primary
follows Iowa on Jan. 8 with 30 delegates at stake.
The Democratic nomination is realistically down to three candidates:
Hillary Clinton, the former First Lady and U.S. senator from New
York; Barack Obama, a U.S. senator from Illinois; and John Edwards,
former U.S. Senator from North Carolina and 2004 vice presidential
candidate.
Wager Web lists the Democrats as the favorites to win the White
House at -180.
Clinton, seeking to become the first female president and who has
the biggest war chest of any candidate, is Wager Webs favorite at
+140 to win the election and -200 to win the nomination. She, of
course, also can rely on the campaign expertise and savvy of her
husband, Bill.
However, Obama, who has gotten a swell of publicity with Oprah
Winfrey's backing, is the favorite to win the Iowa caucus at -110. A
good start in Iowa is important to any campaign, and a poor showing
by Edwards (+550 to win Iowa) could make the Democratic race
officially a two-person affair.
The Republican race appears even more wide open heading into 2008,
with Wager Web listing the GOP as +140 to win the presidential
election.
There are five legitimate challengers for the nomination: former New
York City mayor Rudy Guiliani, former Arkansas governor Mike
Huckabee, U.S. Senator (Ariz.) John McCain, former governor of
Massachusetts Mitt Romney and former U.S. Senator (Tenn.) Fred
Thompson.
Guiliani has the highest profile of the five after leading New York
through the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
He also has the largest campaign fund among Republicans and got
Christian leader Pat Robertson's endorsement.
Guiliani is the Wager Web favorite to win the nomination at +120,
with Huckabee right behind at +185. Huckabee, however, is the -120
favorite to win the Iowa caucus, with Romney second and Giuliani a
distant third.
Thompson, a late entry into the race who is likely more well known
for his movie and TV roles (most recently on "Law and Order"),
trails in most polls but is making a late push to join the
front-runners.
